Dauphin Island is a barrier island in the Gulf of Mexico about 33 miles south of Mobile. The island is also accessible by land via bridge, which can be reached from both Interstates I-10 and I-65. Visitors can also arrive via the Dauphin Island ferry which connects to nearby Gulf Shores, Fort Morgan, and Orange Beach, AL.The populated portion of Dauphin Island is seven miles long without even a single stoplight. It is home to 1,200 year-round residents, and few hundred thousand birds. The island is world-renowned for its diverse bird population. It is a stopover point along the migratory route south, for not only birds, but also Monarch butterflies.
